Introduction to Open Source RDBMS (MySQL)

One of the objectives of the KNOWGATE project is to share information resources among CSIR laboratries. One way to achieve this objective is to create integrated library system (ILS).

MySQL is (as of July 2013) the world's second most widely used relational database management system (RDBMS) and most widely used open-source RDBMS. Koha for backend with cataloguing data stored in MARC, preferred SQL database MySQL. For better understanding of SQL and using RDBMS prepared MySQL database presentation with example text file. SQL knowledge help in generating report in KOHA, which directly intract with KOHA MySQL database. For more detail see KOHA reporting and SQL example for reporting purpose.

Installation of Linux (Ubuntu) and KOHA

One of the objectives of the KNOWGATE project is to share information resources among CSIR laboratries. One way to achieve this objective is to create integrated library system (ILS).

1. Ubuntu and KOHA installation

Installation of Koha are daunting for users unaccustomed to working on the command line in UNIX-like systems. Live CD of KOHA on Ubuntu available on website. In this documentation, we install KOHA on CentOS (which a community version clone of Redhat Enterprise OS and most popular). For linux (CentOS) installation see attached linux installation documentation and download CentOS iso image or use bootable DVD. After istallation of CentOS, configure system properly and set internet connection.

Linux (Ubuntu.xx) installtion:

Download Ubuntu 20.x DVD iso file (also write on dvd)
Ubuntu Installation Guide

Latest KOHA installtion on Ubuntu:

Download install.txt ,copy all the content of install.txt and create new file with these contents named install.sh and run install.sh

KOHA other settings

After installation of KOHA to complete KOHA enable more features and see power of KOHA, there are need required do some extra configuration. By KOHA check list document confirm completion of KOHA installation and configuration.

Email configuration for automatic sending by KOHA for various purpose (patron creation, overdues notices etc)
Multilingual typing support with Google IME settings in OPAC
List of common MARC tag (which is frequently used)
KOHA manual
KOHA checklist (for completion of installation and ready for use)

Open-Source Software (OSS) is computer software with its source code made available with a license in which the copyright holder provides the rights to study, change and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose. Open-source software is developed in a collaborative public manner.

An integrated library system (ILS), also known as a library management system (LMS), is an enterprise resource planning system for a library, used to track items owned, orders made, bills paid, and patrons who have borrowed. An ILS usually comprises a relational database, software to interact with that database, and two graphical user interfaces (one for patrons, one for staff). Most ILSes separate software functions into discrete programs called modules, each of them integrated with a unified interface. Koha is an open source Integrated Library System (ILS), used world-wide by public, school and special libraries. There are various benfits and features as it is a proven, stable technologies with long term support and very cost-effective. Koha is based on a client-server architecture. Migration from older version of DSpace to DSpace 6

One of the objectives of the KNOWGATE project is to share information resources among CSIR laboratries. One way to achieve this objective is to create institutional repositories.

Before you start your upgrade, it is strongly recommended that you create a backup of your DSpace instance and then start upgrade steps. Backups are easy to recover from; a botched install/upgrade is very difficult if not impossible to recover from. The DSpace specific things to backup are: configs, source code modifications, database, and assetstore. On your server that runs DSpace, you might additionally consider checking on your cron/scheduled tasks, servlet container, and database.

Download sample DSpace 3.2 old version of dspace populated with items and bitstreams by communities and collection.
